How did that happen?

Blackburn Rovers 0 – 1 Everton. Trust me when I say that scoreline doesn’t tell the story of this one. Quite frankly Steve Kean probably won’t be sleeping for a week after witnessed the robbery at Ewood Park today.

Howard

Neville Jagielka Distin Baines

Barkley Fellaini Heitinga Arteta

Osman

Anichebe

Everton lined up in their usual, non-adventurous 4-5-1 formation with Anichebe leading the line.

Everton started the game relatively brightly, Barkley again looking decent along with the active Osman. We had a few decent moves, the best being a cross from Barkley which Osman should have done better with.

Blackburn hit the post from a good move, David Dunn thought he’d scored but it hit the inside of the post and rolled across the Everton 6 yard box. Soon after both Dunn and Pedersen went off through injury. A poor half, 0-0.

The second half kicked off, and it was Blackburn dominance. Everton couldn’t get out of their own half, not helped by Ross Barkley who passed the ball to nobody, the new Blackburn forward Mauro Formica latched onto the wayward pass, then ran at Barkley who left his leg out. Formica dived onto the leg in what seemed like slow motion. Penalty. Barkley head in hands.

Hoilett stepped up to take the penalty. SAVED. A poor penalty which Tim Howard saved very well. But this wasn’t the end of the pressure, not by a long way. Blackburn just kept pumping the ball into the box for a good 15 minutes. Everton simply couldn’t get out of their own box. Chance after chance for Blackburn but Tim Howard was up to the task each and every time.

You felt the goal was coming, and it wasn’t long before Blackburn had yet another spot kick. Jagielka didn’t clear the ball, he instead gave it straight back to Blackburn, Mauro Formica ran at the defence and Jagielka took him down. Penalty number two, this time the lively Mauro Formica stepped up. The woodwork saves Everton.

Our best chance of the half came from an Everton break, Anichebe for what felt like the first time this afternoon got past Samba, put a good ball across the box where the onrushing Fellaini sent his shot over when he should have scored.

Blackburn hit the woodwork again as Evertons defence was yet again shambolic, Goodwillie found himself goal side and should have scored, Distin and Jagielka very dodgy.

90th minute. All Evertonians thinking ‘quite how are we going away with a point?’ and we get a ridiculous penalty decision. Samba challenged Fellaini in the air and somehow Lee Mason gave us a penalty. Arteta stepped up, and calmly buried it in the bottom right hand corner. Evertonians behind the goal were going absolutely crazy.

Robbery at Ewood Park. Blackburn Rovers 0 – 1 Everton.

Player Ratings

Howard – 10 – Incredible display

Neville – 5 – I’m straight to question why he is guaranteed a place in our starting XI.
Jagielka – 5 – Awful again, should have been 3 in 3 mistake wise. Post saved him.
Distin – 6 – Did OK. Just not confident in him.
Baines – 7 – Our only attacking outlet as usual. Must be very frustrated currently.

Barkley – 5 – Poor game for the young lad, bad decision for the penalty but he’ll learn.
Fellaini – 4 – Well off the pace, passing was awful.
Heitinga – 6 – Thought he did OK in the middle.
Arteta – 5 – Non existent really, cool penalty under pressure though.
Osman – 6 – Started well but faded

Anichebe – 4 – Samba’s bitch.

We got absolutely pummelled. And I mean pummelled.

Everton 0 – 1 Queens Park Rangers

New season, same problems.

Howard

Neville Jagielka Distin Baines

Rodwell Osman Heitinga Barkley

Cahill

Beckford

I’m currently a very angry and disgruntled Evertonian so I’m gonna make this report as short as possible before I go and get the rope.

From the off, I thought it was very odd of Moyes leaving Arteta, Fellaini & Saha on the bench. Beckford has proven time and time again he cannot play as a lone striker as he quite simply cannot hold the ball up. The only positive was Ross Barkley was starting, although on the left hand side.

We started the game brightly, created a few opportunity’s and pressed well. Baines hit the woodwork with a sublime free kick. Then came a little QPR spell where they kept hold of the ball for a good 5-10 minutes. Inevitably, after our good start, QPR scored after Everton didn’t clear their lines. We must have had 3 chances to clear and we never. Jagielka gave the ball away, Taraabt found Tommy Smith, Jagielka nowhere to be seen and he slotted in the bottom right corner. 1-0. Goodison silent.

Tim Cahill has a glorious opportunity to equalise when Beckford put in a great ball to the far post, where an unmarked Cahill from 4 yards out headed wide. Typical. Half time Everton 0 – 1 QPR.

Second half, no changes as Moyes showed the starting XI some faith. From the off Rodwell should have scored after being put through 1 on 1, it was a tame effort easily saved by Paddy Kenny.

We had a lot of the ball in the QPR half but didn’t really do much with it. The QPR defence looked capable of dealing with anything we threw at them. Arteta came on for the very poor Rodwell in the hope the little Spaniard could create something.

Then came the boo’s. Moyes decided to take our only striker off and replace him with holding midfielder Fellaini. I’ve never seen Goodison turn on Moyes like that before, which really does indicate the mood around the club currently. Fellaini looked poor when we came on, although in his defence he was playing in an advanced role.

The final substitution was Louis Saha for Heitinga. Saha did absolutely nothing. We had a few half chances but we never really looked threatening. The QPR defence that was breached 4 times at home to Bolton last weekend didn’t really look in too much danger.

The final whistle brought more boo’s from disgruntled Evertonians such as myself. Moyes headed straight down the tunnel after a brief handshake with the delighted Neil Warnock.

The only player to come out of this game with any credit is young Ross Barkely, who at 17 years of age was the only creative force in a team full of experienced internationals. I’m embarrassed to an Evertonian tonight if im honest. I worry for us currently. We needed a performance today and they let us down in spectacular fashion.

Player ratings

Howard -5 – All he did was pick the ball from his net

Neville – 5 – Can’t cross or pass. A real weak link and I’m not sure I can handle 4 more years of that.
Jagielka – 4 – At fault for the goal and didn’t look good at all today.
Distin – 6 – Did OK.
Baines – 6 – Got forward as usual but QPR dealt well with him, forcing him onto his right foot. Creative burden is massive on him.

Rodwell – 4 – Never a right winger.
Osman – 5- Gave the ball away too much
Heitinga – 6 – Did OK breaking the play up.
Barkley – 8 – Always involved and looking threatening. Not many on his wavelength offensively.

Cahill – 5 – A usual Cahill performance when he doesn’t score. Miseed a sitter, poor link up play and gave away stupid free kicks.

Beckford – 4 – Not a lone striker. Poor.

Thing’s can only get better. Surely.

Carling Cup Second Round Draw

Everton will host Sheffield United in the second round of the Carling Cup at Goodison Park.

Hopefully Everton will reduce ticket prices for this one.

Tottemham game called off

The council and police spoke this morning regarding the game this weekend and so far it’s been confirmed only the game at White Hart Lane is postponed. The other 9 Premier League games look like they will go ahead.

The Police are said to have been worried they couldn’t keep full control of Tottenham high street after the riots which started there last Friday night.

Everton’s first home game will now be against QPR, who face a daunting trip to Manchester City before that.

Nike to become Everton’s kit manufacturer

11-12 Everton Home Kit

Rumours began spreading that Nike would be our kit manufacturer last season, but today it was confirmed by some of the ITK’s (in the know’s) who are usually spot on regarding the Everton kits & merchandise that Nike will, from next season be manufacturing the Everton kits. For how long it’s not yet sure, but it’s certainly a positive step marketing wise for the club.

Some opinions on the forums are though different to mine. Some of the fans are somewhat disappointed with the news as LCS made us our best kit in years this season, and I agree. But, I cannot forgive them for that pink ‘thing’ last year. Last years home shirt was also very nice, but LCS isn’t a brand many choose to wear in terms of merchandise, and every year they seem to drop a clanger in regards to one of our kits (this year see GK top).

Horrendous

Honestly what were they thinking with that kit? God knows how they came to a decision on it.

From a marketing perspective this is a good move for Everton. Very rare these days you walk down a street and don’t see any Nike shirts, it’s a global presence and a respected one at that. LCS not so much, I personally wouldn’t buy anything other than the Everton home top by LCS, with Nike I’ll certainly consider buying more.

Now we seem to have disposed of LCS, I hope the Kitbag deal is next. That to me was one of the worst moves Everton have made. Yes, there’s a good selection of items on there, but we cannot sell our items anywhere else. You walk in any sports store other than Kitbag across the country and you won’t find anything Everton. It was an awful marketing decision by the club.

Hopefully we’ll get the same range of merchandise, probably not, but I’m willing to bet we’ll sell a hell of a lot more Nike merchandise than we did LCS.

Evaluating our Pre Season

Tim Cahill hasn't scored during pre season

It’s been yet another depressing pre season for the blues. We yet again ended the Premier League campaign well, but yet again we’ve been unable to build on a squad with a nucleus capable of challenging for a Champions League spot. With no new signings to parade and obvious problems off the pitch, Evertonians can perhaps be forgiven for feeling a little pessimistic about the upcoming campaign.

We all know getting them in early is the best form of action, but it’s apparent the club haven’t even got enough to get the wall outside the Park End bricked up again, so any in-comings were always dependant on out-goings. Quite why the out-goings haven’t materialised is baffling. Other than James Vaughan, the blues haven’t flogged anyone else including both unwanted Nigerians Joseph Yobo and Yakubu. What’s more frustrating about it, we’re paying both players between the region of 30-40K a week when they don’t really want to be at the football club, nor do we want them.

We’ve been linked with hundreds of players all summer, some of them seemed likely in the case of Demba Ba & Miroslav Klose. Neither materialised, the former due to wages as he chose to head North East to Newcastle instead. Then there was the biggest transfer saga this summer for Everton, Charles N’Zogbia. Stevie Wonder can see we need some pace on the wing, so it felt like a natural fit for Everton to sign the talent Frenchman. We waited, and waited, and waited some more for us to offload some players to get the £10M necasary to secure N’Zogbia’s signature. It never happened. N’Zogbia & Wigan seemed to hold out a very long time for us to find the cash too but we weren’t forthcoming. Who knows what this team could achieve with N’Zogbia proving the much needed creativity and pace on the wing?

Our Pre-season preparations began in Austria where the non internationals went into the mountains and did some tough fitness work. One boost to the trip was the inclusion of Tim Cahill who usually doesn’t join up with the team until a later date. Maroaune Fellaini was also back in the fold and Louis Saha begun doing some real fitness work since his ankle injury vs Fulham towards the end of last season.

Fellaini had visited Louis Saha's hairdressers before the Austria tour

The blues didn’t play any matches in Austria, but what we could tell from the footage we were shown by the official website and the players on Twitter, it seemed like a good trip with the players undergoing a big test in a high altitude.

The blues then had their first friendly, a trip to Gigg Lane for what has become a repetitive fixture in the calendar. Everton ran out 4-1 winners after 4 goals in the first half. The standout performer Magaye Guaye gave Evertonians something to get excited about with a very good performance from the young Frenchman, netting twice.

The blues then travelled to America to undergo more fitness work and play two games, against Philadelphia Union and DC United. The senior players were back, but it wasn’t long before the Everton curse struck. In the first game of the USA tour against Philadelphia Union, Maroaune Fellaini was omitted from the squad with an injury and Mikel Arteta suffered an injury during the game. Everton lost the game 1-0 due to a late Hernandez goal, it was a good work out for the blues, but the performance was lacking.

Next Everton moved onto the US capital, Washington to face DC United. Without both Arteta and Fellaini the blues ran out 3-1 winners in what was a decent performance in difficult conditions. On that specific day, the residents had been warned to stay indoors with the humidity dangerously high. It was the first time i’d ever seen a football match stop mid way through the first half to have a water break. Bilyaletdinov, Anichebe and Gueye were on the score sheet for the blues as they ran out 3-1 winners.

Everton travelled back to the UK 2 weeks before the season started, next up was recently relegated Birmingham City at St Andrews. This was the first night ‘The Peoples Group’ or as they are now known collectively ‘The Blue Union’ brought banners and leaflets to try to gain support for their campaign against the Everton board. Everton ran out 2-1 winners thanks to a fantastic free kick from Leighton Baines and a typical 20 yard Louis Saha strike.

Another trip to Germany followed. After last seasons defeat at the hands of Wolfsburg, we returned to face a side who were in the Champions League last season, Werder Bremen. We were dominated from start to finish, which was particiulary worrying given that Werder had just lost to a non league side a few days earlier. We looked unfit, lacked creativity and even our defence was poor as Werder created chance after chance. This was definitely the worst performance of pre season. The only player who came out of the game with any credit was young Ross Barkley, who continually ran at the German defence and looked threatening throughout. The less said about the rest, the better.

The bright spot in our pre season, Ross Barkley

Our last game of pre season was back home at Goodison Park against Villarreal. Yet again ‘The Blue Union’ were out trying to gain support but the stewards and police soon took their banners down, confiscated their leaflets and forced the fans out of the ground. If they weren’t causing any trouble in the stands, I think it’s an absolute disgrace personally. Their mission was achieved though, they stirred up mass debate on the forums and Twitter and got themselves on Sky Sports News, speaking about the group and it’s aims. The game wasn’t the best. Everton played well in the first half, but it came at a cost with the injury to Seamus Coleman who looks like he has ligament damage to his left ankle which will keep him out for up to 6 weeks. The second half was an embarrassment. Villarreal absolutely dominated the game with some fantastic passing and moving, something our team most certainly lacks. Everton ended the night with Phil Neville on the wing and Hibbert behind him. Come August 13th, if that’s our right side partnership I think I’ll be watching most of the game through my hands. The game was lost thanks to a fantastic free kick from the world class forward Rossi after Distin dived in erratically.

Seamus Coleman in agony after a horrendous challenge

To conclude, it’s been a poor pre season, saved by the emergence of a real  talent, Ross Barkley. No new signings have for the fans morale at a real low, the protest groups aren’t going away anytime soon either. Should we get off to a bad start this year, the pressure is gonna be huge on Bill Kenwright after spending 2M in 3 seasons, it’s quite simply not good enough. Moyes will have to work wonders again to get us into the top 8, the best we can hope for is another good cup run. If there’s one thing being an Evertonian has taught me, it’s expect the worst. Least then you’ll never be disappointed.

Coleman Injury

It didn’t look good for Seamus Coleman tonight. A very poor tackle from the aggressive Marchena left Coleman in a heap. The replays reminded me of Charlie Adams tackle on Gareth Bale at the end of last year. The ankle was bent horribly.

Thankfully the first X-Ray has revealed no fracture, we now must wait until Monday to see the full extent of Coleman’s injury. Hopefully the ligaments aren’t damaged too badly, as on tonight’s showing, we badly need the young Irishman.

Villarreal

Villarreal

Tonight we face La Liga outfit Villarreal in our final preparation game before our trip to the capital to face Spurs. Tonight is also our first game back at Goodison Park since we beat Chelsea on the last day of the season.

The Spanish side come to Goodison with only one player missing, Angel. It’ll be a tough test for Everton as Villarreal came 4th last year in La Liga and secured a place in the Champions League qualifying round, which will bring back horrible memories for Evertonians. At the time, we all knew the team to avoid in the third qualifying round was indeed, Villarreal. So inevitably we were pitted against the Spanish side. You don’t need me to tell you how that ended.

The main man for Villarreal is Giuseppe Rossi, the former Manchester United striker. He reminds me a lot of a young Michael Owen, he is small, but very quick with great technique. His finishing is top-notch, if we’re slacking tonight at the back we will be punished.

Giuseppe Rossi

Villarreal’s pre season so far:

UCD Dublin 4 – 3 Villarreal

Aberdeen 0 – 1 Villarreal

VfL Wolfsburg 2 – 2 Villarreal

Villarreal 3 – 1 Lazio

The team nicknamed ‘Yellow submarine’ are a few weeks behind us in Pre Season with La Liga kicking off at a later date, so there is no excuses on the fitness front as there were in Germany on Tuesday night.

Prediction – Everton 2 – 1 Villarreal – Beckford, Cahill, Rossi.

I think the boys know we’ve gotta put up some sort of performance tonight to get the morale of the fans up. No new signings to parade and a very average Pre Season have left the club deflated. It’ll also be interesting to see the sort of reaction ‘The Blue Union’ get tonight in the stands.

Lockout

A month or so ago we should have all been excited about the prospect of the upcoming NBA season with the new look NY Knicks roster sporting two All-Stars. The reality of it however, is we are in the midst of a lockout that doesn’t look like ending anytime soon.

The NBPA and NBA have until January 7th 2012 to get a resolution to the problems in place, else there will be no 2011-2012 NBA season. This is of course the worst case scenario.

Hopefully when both parties next meet we get closer to a deal. I want basketball this year, we have the chance of doing something special with Carmelo & Amar’e, exciting times lie ahead.

Werder Bremen vs Everton – Match Report

Our first real test of pre season with a trip to German outfit Werder Bremen. The Germans played in the UEFA Champions League last year and currently have one of the hottest property’s in football, Marko Marin.

the Everton team to face Werder Bremen

Mucha

Hibbert Jagielka(c) Distin Baines

Barkley Heitinga Osman

Cahill Beckford Anichebe

Everton lined up in an unfamiliar 4-3-3 formation, Anichebe occupying somewhat surprisingly the left hand side of Evertons attack. It was another chance for Ross Barkley to show off his talents. And that he certainly did.

The first attack of the game came from Bremen as they broke after two minutes. Hibbert was caught out of position, Arnautobiv crossed for Wagner, but Jagielka stepped in and cleared just in time.

The game was as expected, played at a slow tempo. In one of our better moments of the first half, talented teenager Ross Barkley picked up the ball on the right drove at the Werder Bremen back line, cut inside and hit a good shot with his left foot which brought a good save from the goalkeeper.

On 24 minutes Everton had a half chance. One of our dangerous combos with Baines producing a wonderful cross finding the head of Tim Cahill, but the header was off target. Positive signs though for the blues.

It was clear to see Everton were applying pressure when not in possession, closing down Werder at every opportunity. Anichebe to his credit was working extremely hard to nullify the threat posed by the Werder right back.

Werder should have opened the scoring on 33, a great cross from the right gave tall forward Sandro Wagner an easy header from 3 yards out. He somehow missed and Everton were let off the hook.

The pressure was building as Werder Bremen went up a gear, and they were rewarded on 37 minutes. An awful bit of goalkeeping from Mucha as he was very flimsy in a 50-50 with Sandro Wagner, after a cross came in from the left. Sandro was brave and headed the ball against the erratic Slovakian goalkeeper to give Werder a lead they deserved.

Barkley caused the Germans problems

Everton responded with another great driving run from Barkely as he cut inside, he played a great ball with the outside of his right foot to Beckford, who teased the defender with a step over, then fired the ball across the box where Anichebe was just beaten to the ball by the huge German centre half, Per Mertesacker.

The second half was a largely dull affair with both teams making countless changes. Werder Bremen were on top throughout with complete control of possession. Everton threatened with a free kick very similar to the one Baines scored against Birmingham. He hit the wall with this effort, but it fortunately came straight back to him, he hit a blistering shot which forced the keeper in a very good save.

Once Barkley went off we worryingly lost all our attacking threat, nobody really got on the ball and looked to make something happen. Baines tried to get forward and start some attacks but Bilyaletdinov’s link up play at times wasn’t the best, and neither was the passing of the entire Everton team.

Werder had a few chances in the second half, the exciting young play maker Marko Marin caused the blues a few problems with his pin point through balls, one of which sent the Germans through 1-on-1 with Tim Howard, they shot a few inches wide of the left post and Everton were let off the hook.

We started the game with a very high line which I felt worked up until around the 30th minute where Werder upped the tempo and started to get in behind. Towards the end of the game, we were camped into our own box, every man behind the ball which surprised me. I’m not a big fan of every man being brought back for a corner either, especially in a friendly. Sometimes I think Moyes is just a bit too negative, I can’t see the damage in leaving someone like Beckford on the halfway line for corners. But, in Moyes we must trust.

They say Pre-Season is all about fitness, well if that’s the case this was a great workout in the Everton Pre-Season. We were awful in terms of performance, but Werder made us work extremely hard and they performed very well to earn the 1-0 victory, which will hopefully benefit our players fitness wise ahead of Villarreal’s trip to Goodison on Friday.

Bright spot and Man of the Match for me has to be Ross Barkley. Even at this early stage, you can tell we have a very good player on our hands. He is direct, quick and has plenty of flair. He’s not afraid to try to make that killer pass in the final third too which excites me as it’s something we so clearly lack.

Mucha cost us yet another goal although the defence didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory. Osman was surprisingly poor with his passing. Anichebe although worked hard for a change, had absolutely no impact on the match and Beckford confirmed what we all know, his hold up play is non-existent.

Really looking forward to going back to Goodison Park on Friday. The new season is very close now, so a good performance on Friday is definitely needing to lift the spirits of Evertonians before we travel down to the capital on August 13th.
